One of the difficulties for me as an outsider here in Aceh is finding foods that are not as spicy as the locals generally enjoy. Most meals here are "sangat pedas", very spicy. Back home, I considered myself to be someone who enjoys eating spicy foods. Coming here to Aceh though, I may have to reconsider how I define spicy!
After trying and failing on many occasions to find less spicy varieties of food, my wife got pangsit for me at a local warung. For those reading from outside Indonesia, pangsit is kind of pan fried Chinese style noodle. It is generally rather oily and typically not as spicy as other dishes. Finally having access to something that I can tolerate is helping me to enjoy my time here MUCH more.
For my readers, what are some Acehnese foods I might enjoy that are less spicy? I'm a fairly picky eater, so I'm not generally eager to try new foods. Still, I need to try more foods and I'd like to get a taste for the local foods.
I can't live on Pizza Hut and KFC forever.

ReplyDeletewell, there are a lot acehnese food that's not very spicy, Mr Shaw, such as Dodol, canai and not least timphan, but, in fact, those are just snacks, we couldn't consume it as frequent as we need. it is actually weird if we consume those food every day. Have u ever tried Pecal?, it's vegetables salad which blended with Peanut or bean sauces, u have to try it, it's not so spicy. But I do really could feel what you felt, because i had once too when i was in Bandung. There were a lot of sweet food. In the first, it got me 'sick', because i usually eat spicy food.
ReplyDeletebk, I haven't! I should try more foods here, I just ...
ReplyDeleteOk, here's the truth of the matter: I'm a very picky eater. It drives my wife insane.
Daniel. I would consider myself as orthodox when it comes to food. Not only I am too picky, I could only eat food that I know since my childhood. It's not a problem if I haven't leave aceh. Then trouble came when I spend my 4-year-study in Malaysia. Almost none of the foods I barely ate. Thanks God that I finally could find Indian foods. Though their foods are much spicier than Aceh foods, from there, I learned to eat different kind of foods. Tell you what. I could not even eat pizza, nor burger, nor can I drink coca cola. Now, I still can't drink coca cola, but I love pizza.
